Art Curriculum

The Art curriculum at All Saints’ Catholic High School will provide all pupils with an ambitious and academic learning experience that builds knowledge and develops skills. The curriculum will be planned coherently and will be sequenced towards cumulatively sufficient knowledge and skills allowing all pupils to progress to aspirational post-16 destinations and beyond.

Subject curriculum will be designed around the following five areas:

• Knowledge (and skills) - explicit teaching of knowledge and skills.
• Vocabulary - explicit teaching of tier two and three vocabulary.
• Sequenced five year continuum - pupils will experience a sequential and gradually more challenging academic curriculum through their five years at All Saints’.
• Memory, recall and cognition - pupils will be exposed to metacognition strategies and how to improve long-term memory.
• Reliable assessment - this will be formative and summative over the five-year continuum.

Intent:

The Art curriculum at KS3  is taught on a rotation with pupils receiving 13 hours of lessons in Yr7 and 8 and 19 hours in Yr9.  The curriculum follows the aims of the national curriculum to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of Art, Craft and Design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They should also know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. In Art, Craft and Design, pupils will explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They will explore traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. Researching the work of artists is an integral part of their learning and form a primary source of inspiration. Pupils are encouraged to experiment with a range of materials and become more aware of the properties of line, tone, form, texture, colour, shape, pattern and composition and increase proficiency in their execution. This model builds upon the Key stage 2 requirements where pupils should be taught to develop their techniques including their control and their use of materials with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of Art, Craft and Design. Our curriculum model is a skilfully sequenced, broad and coherent knowledge pathway, which leads students to success at GCSE and beyond. The choice of units within the KS3 programme is linked to units explored at KS4 and provide a platform of knowledge that aims to build and embed their proficiency in execution of materials and techniques within Art. All units link through the development of knowledge from sequenced prior learning

Work is assessed throughout KS3 and at KS4 the three-year course consists of two components: Portfolio of Work (60%) and Externally Set Task (40%). Progression routes for the course can be ‘A’ Level Art and Design and BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design.

Our curriculum provides students with the opportunities to:

• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences .
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other Art, Craft and Design techniques.
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of Art, Craft and Design.
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

• The progress and attainment of students at GCSE.
